Placement of Artwork
Placement of Artwork
First of all, you have to decide where you want your artwork to be placed in your home/office/studio/restaurant/hotel.
Whether you're already considering a spot or exploring options, the following are worth considering.
1. Direct Sun
Many works do not do well in bright, sunny areas, so it is important to know how to protect your work from the sun. Watercolors and other works on paper are especially susceptible to fading and surface deterioration when exposed to direct sunlight, whereas pigments in oil and acrylic paints fade over time.
If possible, try to hang your piece in a more shaded area (or if hanging your piece in a sunny corner is really unavoidable, be professional about placing your piece behind UV-protected glass, please consult your framer)
2. Temperature Changes
It is also important to protect your work from seasonal temperature changes. Frequent or large temperature changes can damage artwork, as can high humidity or damp conditions. When choosing where to hang your new artwork, consider how your media needs align with the space you plan to place it in.
In kitchens and rooms with fireplaces and radiators, it should also be considered that strong heat sources can lead to warping and discoloration of some media.
3. Moisture
Love the idea of hanging art in your bathroom, but remember that works on paper or delicate surfaces may not come off well. To avoid mold and surface damage the area requires adequate ventilation. We recommend that you consult your framer on how best to protect your artwork by properly sealing the frame to prevent moisture ingress.
4. Accidental Collisions
It may sound obvious, but protecting your artwork from everyday collisions is an important consideration. Display fragile sculptures and pottery pieces in a safe area out of traffic in your home. If you have small children or energetic pets, consider display cases for intricate items to provide an extra level of protection and peace of mind.
5. Create Atmosphere
Own Home is a lot of fun to design. Think about how the artwork interacts with the space, experiment with layouts and colors.
Hanging the Artwork
Hanging the Artwork
Once you've decided on the perfect place to hang your new artwork, dust off your toolbox and hang it on the wall.
1. Check the Mounts
Examine the mounts on the back of the artwork to determine the best way to mount it to the wall. Most framed works come with picture wire attached to the back, but some framed canvas paintings may only have a hanging crossbar.
Best way to hang your art If you are unsure, please consult your framer or gallerist for suggestions.
2. Weight
Consider the weight of the piece and the strength of the wall it will be hung on. Most medium-sized pieces can be hung using two nails or screws, or a traditional picture hook. However, particularly large or heavy tasks (or parts used on particularly weak or fragile walls) may require stronger fixings.
Again, it's better to be safe than sorry. If in doubt, consult a framer, or hire a craftsman for particularly difficult pieces.
3. Hanging Multiple Pieces
If you are creating a collection of artwork, try drawing the shapes of the pieces on paper and use that to decide where to hang them on the wall. Once you've modeled your ramp in paper form, all that's left to do is attach the pieces to the wall.
Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Once the artwork is securely hung on the wall, the hard work is over. You can sit down and watch it to your heart's content.
But just in case, there are a few simple things you can do to keep it looking beautiful for years to come. Just as there are certain ways to clean the various surfaces around your home, such as wood and glass, it's also important to know how to clean your artwork.
1. Dust the Artwork Regularly
For framed or hard-surfaced artwork, use a soft, dry white cloth. A soft white brush is a good choice if you want to clean the canvas, such as painting on heavy textures or fragile surfaces. A brand new, unused makeup brush will suffice.
2. Do Not Use Chemicals
Do not use chemical detergents or water to clean the artwork.
If your collection needs to be thoroughly cleaned, we recommend that you seek professional help to avoid damage that is difficult or impossible to undo.
3. Check for Moisture
Artwork should be checked regularly for signs of moisture. These signs - discoloration and noticeable brown spots (sometimes called foxing) - are most likely to appear on the back of the artwork.
A few times a year it's a good idea to remove a piece of the wall to make sure everything is in order.
That's it! Take the time to collect the perfect pieces for your home and keep them shining for years to come.
